NAD Supports “Tropic Thunder” Boycott
By advocacy | August 12, 2008
The NAD signed on in support of the protest against the new movie, “Tropic Thunder.” The NAD has also learned that a local protest is planned for Wednesday, August 13, in Washington, DC, against the movie. Other protests are being planned nationwide. “Tropic Thunder” includes an extensive and very negative portrayal of an individual with intellectual disabilities and repeatedly uses the offensive term “retard” (the “r-word”) in a derogatory and demeaning manner.
The NAD opposes the use of words and actions that perpetuate negative stereotypes and attitudes about people. Movies or other forms of “entertainment” that try to justify this kind of behavior by calling it “funny” cannot be condoned.
The Arc of DC, in conjunction with other disability organizations, is organizing a local public protest of the movie:
Wednesday, August 13, 2008
Regal Gallery Place Stadium 14
701 7th Street, NW
Washington, DC
The rally will take place at the 11:30am movie show time and between the 5:00pm and 7:00pm show times.
The protest will focus on making people better understand the hateful outcome this film is sure to create. People with intellectual or other disabilities are valued members of their communities.

I agree. Its just a movie if you keep protesting over every little word uttered in the movie that’s regarded offensive you won’t have a movie to go to. Get a grip remember freedom of speech is going to invoke everything we say. So like I said get a grip

Haha! So what?!
I personally think our society here in USA in general is too easily offended these days, people just need to live their own lives and not worry about what other people are saying. So, it is just a comedy movie.
Man, I am looking forward to see this movie!
Your involvement in this boycott against this movie is totally embarrassed!

i’m confused; is the movie showing a deaf character?
i’m disappointed that there’s a protest instead of meaningful discussion between NAD and the producers of the movie. I’m disappointed that NAD still does primitive methods such as protesting when it should be the last resort.
then again, what can i say; hard to give an opinion to a stampede. Good luck on your protests, if anyone mentions “NAD”, i’m actually “hard of hearing”

So, how’s that boycott coming??? Anyone that thinks Tropic Thunder is making fun of anything but the pretentious blowhards in Hollywood must be re****, I’m sorry, mentally disabled. Now, go protest something that deserves a protest, the war in Iraq, high gas prices, anything but a freakin movie.
