NAD Applauds Senators Harkin and Hatch
By advocacy | August 1, 2008
The “ADA Amendments Act of 2008” (S. 3406) was introduced in the Senate, yesterday, by Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) and Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT) – with 57 co-sponsors (see list below).
The House of Representatives recently introduced and passed a similar bill, also called the “ADA Amendments Act of 2008” (H.R. 3195), by an overwhelming vote of 402 to 17. The Senate bill is a little different, but has the same goals as the bill passed in the House – to strengthen protection from discrimination based on disability. Since the ADA was passed in 1990, the U.S. Supreme Court has limited the definition of “disability” and who is covered by the ADA. The “ADA Amendments Act of 2008” will help ensure that individuals who use hearing aids or cochlear implants qualify for protection under the ADA and obtain reasonable accommodations. Grassroots advocacy efforts will be needed to get this bill passed by the Senate. More information will be posted soon. Stay tuned.

yes, Sen Harkin and others are the people for the people.
but i question where was NAD when the bill was being proposed ? i was up there at the NCIL Conference and made Hill visits to my legislatures to push for the ADA Restoration act and the 21 century communications act. people with various disabilities from all over the US were there, there was a rally and march to the Hill - no where was NAD to be found.
until we all join together and work together not much can be accomplished. just my two cents worth.

The NAD has been very involved in the development of the new ADA Amendments Act and the 21st Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act, and very active in efforts on Capitol Hill to get these bills introduced and passed. Many advocacy groups, including the NAD, have joined together and are working together to get these bills passed.
Great you were at the NCIL Conference and even more wonderful that you made Hill visits to your legislators. This is exactly the kind of efforts NAD and many others are doing, too.
