Movie Captioning Update
By advocacy | March 9, 2007
People who are deaf or hard of hearing want to be able to attend any showing of any movie in any theater at any time. We want to be able to sit anywhere in the movie theater with our family and friends. We want equal access to the movie soundtrack through high quality captioning that is consistently reliable.Â
The NAD is committed to achieving that goal.
Recently the NAD participated in an Emerging Technologies Symposium sponsored by Regal Entertainment Group. The purpose of the Symposium was to demonstrate several personal captioning display devices that could be used in movie theaters. For more information about the Emerging Technologies Symposium and the systems that were demonstrated, go to emerging tech.pdf.Â
The NAD will continue to advocate for caption display systems so that all deaf and hard of hearing movie goers can attend and enjoy their favorite movie at a time and place of their choosing.

I once envisoned the idea for special glasses to read captions on the silver screen back to my WV School of the Deaf high school days (80s).
One of the deaf HS teacher snapped at me - “Why we have to wear special glasses while others do not have to”. Her comment struck me pretty hard. I eventually agreed with her.
Many deaf people still prefer “open captions”, not the Rear Window Captioning (RWC).
I often got the looks from people and kids looked curiously and wary at me and other deaf moviegoers with the use of smoked plexiglass transparency screen.
I am sure that would be the same thing happened with the special captioning glasses. Why not make the durable plastic glasses, instead of cardboard ones.

I look forward to the day when our family of five can attend any movie we want to, at any time, in any location and have full access.

I am a court reporter and do CART at a college in Philadelphia. I am looking into doing movie or TV captioning. Does anyone know who I would contact to do this type of work?
